Trust me, I hate credit cards just as much as the next person because they have caused me a lot of grief in my life over the years since I was old enough to have one.

In fact, as I have mentioned many times on this blog, we were at one point over $75,000 in credit card debt. Looking back, I can’t even believe we were able to get out of that amount of debt. With perseverance and a lot of hard work, we did it and couldn’t be happier that being in debt is behind us.

So with that being said, I am not recommending this practice if you are already deep in debt. You should cut off all use of credit cards and focus on getting out of debt first and foremost.

On the flip side, if you can use credit cards responsibly and pay off your credit cards every month, there are a wide world of rewards awaiting you at your fingers tips that can lead you to cheap or free vacations to travel anywhere you want around the world.

There are a number of ways that you can go about this, from volunteering, teaching, working or by organizing a group of travelers, just a little effort can go a long way to getting yourself traveling abroad without breaking the bank.

Here is a side hustle where you can not only get paid for it, it can also put a roof over your head for a period of time for free! People from around the world are looking for a trusting person like yourself to come over to their home and keep an eye on things while they are away.

Why is this a thing? Well the answer is a variety of reasons. A lot of times people are traveling for business or just pure vacation and they need someone to provide company for their dog or cat while they are away. Others need someone living in their home to make sure things stay on the up and up through the winter seasons. Perhaps gardening is huge for another traveler who doesn’t want the weeds to take over while they trek the globe.

None the less, all these reasons allow a great opportunity for you to move on into their humble or luxury abode and take in the sights of their local community, town or city for free.

Now, a lot of these opportunities exist in the United States and they are even happening in areas near you if you happen to be in the United States. However, if you are up for a worldly adventure there are house sitting gigs around the globe as well.

AirBNB has become the staple for homes away from home and for cheap too!   I’m sure just like Uber was to Taxi Cab companies, AirBNB has hotel chains shaking in their boots.

If you don’t know what AirBNB is well let me enrich you on the idea.   AirBNB is a online web site where you can get connected with people who are offering their place up for you to spend the night or more in exchange for a fee.

At times the fee is even less than what you would pay at a commercial hotel chain, but you might get an entire house instead of being crammed into a tiny cookie cutter room.

Here Are Some Cheap AirBNB Homes

Below is an image of what you can get overlooking Los Angeles for $125 a night.   This is just a random selection that I pulled up on the AirBNB site.   There are zillions of more options waiting for you.  Compare this to your average, run of the mill hotel room and you will be hooked on AirBNB forever![Read More…]

India

I visited several cities in India a few years ago and wow what an amazing experience.     First of all, I have never seen so many people in one place in my life.  With well over 1 billion people in this country, people watching never gets old here.

As an example how cheap India can be, we would grab transportation from one end of the city to the other in a auto rickshaw for less than 1 US Dollar.   India has come a long way in recent past, so you will see both very rich accommodations right next to extreme poverty.[Read More…]

Back in the day, you just called your travel agent and that’s how you booked your trip.    The internet wasn’t a thing.   Now, you have 3 million different options to book travel and that leads a lot of people not knowing where to turn.   Do I book direct with the airline or do I use one of the numerous travel sites out there?   What time of day do I book or what day is best?     Should I wait to the last minute or should I book early?

All these questions lead many people to pay more for their flights that they really need to and this is how airlines make money on you.

Having worked in the corporate office of a global company, I saw the booking process on a daily basis as they were shipping people around to every corner of the planet.   In this experience I picked up a few secrets that the airlines are not going to ever tell you.

Here are my secrets that I have learned along the way.[Read More…]

“Experiences are far more valuable than money ever will be.”

I have always known that experiences are by far more valuable than money ever will be.   I guess I always figured that it takes money to get those experiences, but I have learned that this is not necessarily true.      I’m here to tell you that you can travel on the cheap or maybe even free if you play your cards right.   If you are interested in going to these places on the cheap, then check out my bonus post 10 Ways to Travel on the Cheap or Free Worldwide where I explain it.

I wanted to cover 20 places that you should travel in your 20’s.    Go places before you settle down, get married and then start a family.   Trust me on this one!   Take the time in your 20’s to do this, even if it means backpacking and camping in tents as you make your way across Europe, Tahiti, Thailand, Brazil and more.   You will thank me later when you have a life filled with experiences.  It might not cost as much as you think if you are frugal about your approach.

The other aspect of travel is that it expands your horizons beyond the bubble of your home land be it the United States or elsewhere.   When you are raised you are brought up with certain beliefs which are important, but seeing how other people live life abroad will open your horizons more than any book will be able to teach you.   When you see how people live in the depths of India or Mexico or Thailand, these experiences will forever change you.

Unfortunately, until you take that first step to see and experience these new places, you will not understand what I am telling.

So take my word for it, go out when your young, when you have the time and explore the world…

Remember… “It’s the Journey, not the Destination.”

Traveling is one of life’s most rewarding experiences to me.   I think it all started when I was younger and my parents would set off across the country on a regular basis in their Airstream camper, as part of the Wally Byam club with a caravan of trailers and like minded people in tow.

The open road, the unknown adventure, meeting new people along the way, seeing new and experiencing what this great world has to offer.

Needless to say, I developed a travel bug from the early days of my life that continues on even more as an adult.   I Love to Travel!   It’s pretty obvious that we have a love for travel based on the emphasis we put on it in our budget.  It’s important to us, so it receives a fair share of attention when we are “bucketing” our money, as we call it.

Yes you need to budget for vacation, just like everything else.   You have to set a goal on what you need to save in order to take the vacations you want every year.

Here are some tips and tricks on how we tackle our vacation goals each year.[Read More…]
