How To Earn Free Vacations Using Credit Cards

Trust me, I hate credit cards just as much as the next person because they have caused me a lot of grief in my life over the years since I was old enough to have one.

In fact, as I have mentioned many times on this blog, we were at one point over $75,000 in credit card debt. Looking back, I can’t even believe we were able to get out of that amount of debt. With perseverance and a lot of hard work, we did it and couldn’t be happier that being in debt is behind us.

So with that being said, I am not recommending this practice if you are already deep in debt. You should cut off all use of credit cards and focus on getting out of debt first and foremost.

On the flip side, if you can use credit cards responsibly and pay off your credit cards every month, there are a wide world of rewards awaiting you at your fingers tips that can lead you to cheap or free vacations to travel anywhere you want around the world.

As a simple example in an earlier post, I wrote about how we stayed at Disney for 10 solid days and our hotel bill was $0. We just got back from traveling to go on a 9 night Caribbean cruise and when we needed to stay in a hotel (4 nights to be exact before and after the cruise), all 4 nights at these hotels were completely free.

We have even earned higher reward categories because we are earning credit card points all year long. Even after cashing in 4 nights for free, we still have 179,678 points to spend on free hotel stays.

As you can see, we are a Platinum Elite and with that it earns you even more fun things when you stay at hotels (Free Breakfast, Late Checkout, Free Snacks, Free Points, etc.). This is specifically the hotel program we are in, but there are many others out there for you to take advantage of.

The hotel credit card we are with has a program in which you can exchange points for other things like airlines, so with one program you can get flights, food and hotel stays for free. So don’t let anyone tell you that nothing in this world is free. I am here to tell you that it is possible to get a free vacation.

Tip #1 – Spend money like you normally would

The key here is that you life today costs money. You have to buy food, you have to buy gas for your car, you have to pay your phone bill and you need to buy clothes, etc.

Since you already plan to buy these items, instead of just taking the money out of your checking account to purchase these items, buy them first on your credit card and then immediately pay them off with your bank account. You can either pay off your credit card as you put things on it, or just wait until the end of the credit card statement period and pay the bill in one lump sum.

For every dollar you spend on your credit card, you earn points. With the points, you can turn those into things like free hotel stays, free flights on airlines, free gas, free groceries and many other perks that go along with these reward programs.

You will be surprised on how fast these rewards stack up.

Tip #2 – Pay off your credit card every month

The whole point in using your credit card is to get “Free” vacations. If you don’t pay off your credit card each month, interest will start to haunt you and what you originally thought was going to be a great idea will begin to cost you more for that vacation than if you didn’t do anything at all.

What I mean is that if you don’t pay off your credit card each month the interest added to your statement will begin to mount. Don’t let this happen.

You also want to make sure you get their payment to them in time because not only will interest be charged but a late charge will be assessed. This is why I like paying credit cards as I use them, then you never run into this issue because you are constantly paying the credit card off and it always satisfies the due date for the statement.

Some people have heard that interest is charged instantly as soon as you put a charge on the card. So why would this then be a good idea. Well this is simply not true. Interest is only assessed if you don’t pay them their money back by the due date. The key here is to make sure its paid completely off before the due date so you get the points without any negative penalty.

Tip # 3 – Take advantage of sign up bonus rewards

For a number of these reward programs, they generally have a teaser to get people to sign up to their credit card and program.

For example, many programs will give you 50,000 – 100,000 free points when you spend a certain dollar amount within the first 3 months of having the credit card.

Sometimes this program offers other incentives so be on the look out for that. They do this periodically and is not offered all the time. The free points is generally a standard offering.

So don’t miss out on these great offers at the start of the program. Don’t sign up to them until you are ready to meet their minimum so you can take advantage of those freebies.
